Definition

Moving money from a pre-tax retirement account to Roth. The pre-tax portion of the converted amount counts as ordinary income in the conversion year.

Converting $50,000 from a traditional IRA adds that amount to taxable income this year. You can take Roth earnings tax-free when your distribution meets the qualified-distribution rules.
